Polyisocyanate crosslinking agents for solventborne adhesives

Bayer manufactures polyisocyanates under the name Desmodur®. Desmodur® L and N are used as crosslinking agents in solventborne adhesives for the packaging and film lamination industries.
Properties: Desmodur® L and N are largely colorless and have a good adhesion-promoting effect on plastics. Adhesives based on Desmocoll® and Baycoll® also give the Desmodur® improved heat resistance, hydrolysis resistance and better resistance to grease, oils and solvents. Adhesives for the packaging industry are produced through the combination of Desmodur® with Desmocoll® 100 grades and Baycoll®-based polyurethanes containing hydroxyl groups. Such adhesives adhere very well to oxidatively pretreated polyethylene (for example by corona discharge).

Uses: Desmodur® L and N in combination with hydroxyl polyurethane adhesives are used primarily for the production of adhesives for plastics. Desmodur L 75 has proved particularly useful for the production of adhesives for plastic film for food packaging. Adhesives based on Desmodur® L in combination with Desmocoll® 100 grades are used mainly for the production of heavy-duty sacks as are used, for example, for packing fertilizers. Desmodur N grades are used primarily for high-spec adhesives (stability to discoloration and low migration).

Advantages:
  • Very good adhesion
  • High strength and durability
  • Resistance to grease, oils, solvents
